Game Plan - Our Theme
Project M.A.R.S. (Mechanical Alternatives for Reindeer
and Santa)
MISSION: Having discovered water on Mars, we expect there may be
Martian children there too. We must deliver holiday gifts to these children,
despite the subfreezing temperatures which keep Santa and Reindeer at
bay!
TASK: Build a robot to pull the sleigh and deliver toys to the good little
girls and boys; while there we can also accomplish the task collecting
medical supplies, rations, and fuel (less important, of course, than the
delivering presents) but necessary per B.E.S.T. mandates.
GAMEPLAN: Build a theme around a favorite holiday, leveraging
traditions, songs, décor, etc. Our ultimate goal is to be in Auburn the first
weekend in December. This is the time of year when the winter holiday is
on most everyone’s mind. Let’s beat the holiday rush and start in October!
ROBOT: Build a robot to accomplish the tasks set forth in our mission
from Best, Inc. If he can pick up the tools on the game platform, he can
pull a dolly out of the sleigh for Suzy. Outfit him with a nice Santa hat and
obligatory white beard, and he is good to go.
TABLE DISPLAY: Santa’s workshop, a behind-the-scenes look at the
planning and prep for bringing our M.A.R.S. robot to life. Put a sign under
the Santa’s workshop sign that says “Top Secret Project M.A.R.S.” We
outfit our table display personnel as elves, complete with pointy shoes and
jingly hats, who can discuss every element from planning to marketing to
driving, maybe including their perspective of Santa’s involvement in the
project.
MASCOT: Santa, of course!
COMMUNITY OUTREACH: A natural fit with elementary school
“believers”. They will be excited to hear about Santa’s mission to fulfill the
dreams of Martian children on Christmas Eve, and will be eager to work
as seasonal help in the workshop (creating give-aways) to make this
happen.
FUND-RAISING: Picture this…. Our students visit local aerospace or
engineering firms with the concept of pulling a sleigh to Mars with a Santa-
built robot, fulfilling the lives of Martian children as they experience their
first holiday season holiday. What a selfless approach to the holiday
season. Who wouldn’t want to equip these students with the resources
necessary to make it happen?!
